DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded immediate and stern legal action on February 8, 2017, against individuals who coerced caretaker Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam into resigning his post. Panneerselvam had revealed that he was subjected to intimidation and compelled to sign a resignation letter at the Poes Garden residence, despite having been formally administered the oath of office by the Governor.
Stalin characterized the incident as an extraordinary assault on constitutional principles and democratic governance. He stated that when a constitutionally sworn Chief Minister could be intimidated and stripped of office by extraconstitutional elements, it demonstrated the complete breakdown of administrative authority in Tamil Nadu. Such lawlessness, he warned, threatened the foundational tenets of parliamentary democracy and executive independence.
The opposition leader insisted that law enforcement agencies and constitutional authorities must register a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Panneerselvam's coerced resignation. Stalin stressed that unelected family cabals could not be permitted to dictate state politics through intimidation and duress. He affirmed that the DMK would vigorously fight to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure that constitutional propriety and the rule of law prevailed across the state.
