DMK working president M.K. Stalin called upon acting Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao on February 8, 2017, to arrive in Chennai without delay to safeguard state interests amidst severe political uncertainty. Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu's administrative machinery had remained paralyzed for over eight months, beginning during former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's prolonged hospitalization and persisting through subsequent internal turmoil within the ruling AIADMK.
Stalin emphasized that the prolonged governance vacuum had caused vital citizen services, welfare administration, and policy implementation to grind to a halt across departments. With rival factions vying for control and no effective leadership addressing public grievances, the state faced unprecedented administrative drift. He stated that the constitutional head of state must act decisively to protect institutional stability.
The opposition leader demanded that the Governor intervene directly in Chennai rather than monitoring developments remotely from Mumbai. Stalin urged the Governor to assess prevailing conditions firsthand, uphold constitutional principles, and ensure the formation of a functioning government capable of addressing severe drought conditions, civic challenges, and public welfare. He reiterated DMK's commitment to defending constitutional governance in Tamil Nadu.
