DMK working president M.K. Stalin launched a blistering condemnation on February 9, 2017, against the unprecedented confinement of elected AIADMK legislators like political hostages in private luxury resorts, describing it as a shameful spectacle that profoundly degrades the dignity of parliamentary democracy. Stalin expressed deep outrage over reports that more than one hundred ruling party MLAs were transported in chartered buses under strict security escort to a coastal resort at Koovathur, where their mobile phones were reportedly seized and external communication was completely cut off.

Stalin emphasized that elected representatives derive their democratic mandate from the sovereign public and are accountable to the citizens of their respective constituencies, not to private factional bosses or family syndicates. Imprisoning legislators in luxury resort enclosures to prevent them from interacting with voters or exercising independent judgment during impending confidence motions constitutes an insult to constitutional principles. He observed that treating lawmakers like captives under armed vigilance reflects extreme fear, illegitimacy, and utter desperation within the ruling party.

The opposition leader called upon law enforcement agencies and constitutional authorities to immediately liberate the confined legislators. He affirmed that democracy cannot function under coercive resort confinement.
