DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin appealed to Tamil Nadu Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao on February 9, 2017, urging him to take decisive constitutional measures to guarantee a completely free, transparent, and independent legislative assembly floor test to preserve democratic dignity. Stalin's urgent appeal came amidst escalating political tension as rival AIADMK factions traded allegations, while more than a hundred ruling party MLAs were reportedly sequestered under coercive conditions to prevent them from exercising free choice.

Stalin emphasized that the Governor, as the constitutional head of the state, carries an uncompromised duty under the Constitution of India to ensure that any vote of confidence is conducted without physical intimidation, financial inducements, or administrative duress. He stressed that elected representatives must have the democratic freedom to consult their constituents and cast their votes according to their conscience, rather than being herded under armed surveillance into luxury resorts. Ensuring an impartial legislative process supervised by independent observers remains essential for maintaining public trust in parliamentary democracy.

The opposition leader insisted that the Governor must act strictly according to constitutional principles without partisan delays. He warned that compromising legislative freedom would inflict lasting harm on Tamil Nadu's democratic governance.
