Editorial context

DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin met Tamil Nadu Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan on February 10, 2017, submitting an extensive memorandum requesting his urgent constitutional intervention to end the nine-month-long administrative paralysis gripping the state and protect Tamil Nadu's vital developmental interests. Stalin informed the Governor that ever since the hospitalization of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in September 2016, followed by protracted internal power struggles within the ruling party, state governance had been completely abandoned.

Stalin highlighted the catastrophic consequences of administrative inertia, including severe rural drought, distress suicides among farmers, water scarcity in urban centers, and mounting financial deficits. With the entire cabinet engrossed in resort politics and factional maneuvers to capture party leadership, citizens were left entirely without executive redress. Stalin urged the Governor to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities by ensuring that a stable, lawful, and accountable administration is established in Tamil Nadu without further procedural procrastination.

The opposition leader stated that the DMK, as the principal opposition party, has a democratic obligation to safeguard the people's welfare. He emphasized that the Governor must act impartially to uphold constitutional governance.
