Editorial context

DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent formal representation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 11, 2017, requesting his direct intervention to secure expeditious presidential assent for the legislation passed unanimously by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly exempting the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. Stalin emphasized that the state assembly had enacted two historic bills to protect the legitimate educational rights of Tamil Nadu students and preserve the state's established, transparent medical admission system.

Stalin highlighted in his letter that imposing a uniform national entrance examination based on CBSE syllabi severely discriminates against lakhs of students studying under the state board curriculum, particularly those hailing from rural, underprivileged, and economically disadvantaged backgrounds who lack access to expensive private coaching centers. Tamil Nadu had methodically built an exemplary public healthcare network by training doctors from diverse rural communities, and centralizing medical admissions through NEET directly undermines this hard-won social achievement.

The opposition leader urged the Prime Minister to respect Tamil Nadu's legislative consensus and recommend immediate presidential approval. He affirmed that safeguarding social justice in medical education remains an inviolable principle.
