DMK working president M.K. Stalin proposed an innovative sporting policy on February 12, 2017, suggesting that courageous youth participating in traditional Jallikattu events should be formally recognized with prestigious sporting titles, institutional honors, and substantial prizes comparable to 'Man of the Match' awards in professional cricket. Stalin shared this forward-looking concept after witnessing the tremendous bravery, athletic agility, and cultural discipline exhibited by rural bull tamers and cattle rearers across Tamil Nadu's traditional arenas.
Stalin emphasized that Jallikattu is not a mere rural pastime; it is an ancient indigenous sport that showcases exceptional physical fitness, courage, and an intimate bond between humans and native cattle breeds. Modernizing the administration of traditional rural sports through structured recognitions, medical insurance, and standardized accolades would elevate the dignity of rural athletes and encourage the younger generation to preserve native livestock heritage. By treating indigenous sports with the same institutional respect accorded to mainstream athletic disciplines, the state can foster immense rural pride and athletic excellence.
The opposition leader stated that future progressive administrations should formulate comprehensive schemes to support traditional rural sportspersons. He reaffirmed the DMK's enduring commitment to celebrating Tamil Nadu's indigenous sporting heritage.
