DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin announced on February 19, 2017, that the DMK will conduct a massive statewide day-long hunger strike on February 22 across all district headquarters in Tamil Nadu to condemn the blatant murder of democracy committed inside the legislative assembly during the confidence motion. Stalin declared that this peaceful satyagraha would demonstrate the party's unyielding commitment to constitutional values and channel the profound outrage felt by millions of citizens over the dubious parliamentary procedures adopted by Speaker P. Dhanapal.
Stalin explained that the ruling administration had forced through an illegitimate vote of confidence after using assembly marshals and police battalions to assault and evict all eighty-nine DMK legislators from the chamber. Denying the opposition's legitimate demand for a division of votes or a secret ballot behind locked doors represented a complete negation of representative governance. The statewide hunger strike would provide a dignified, peaceful platform for citizens, cadres, and democratic allies to record their unequivocal rejection of the newly installed proxy administration.
The opposition leader appealed to party cadres to maintain total peace, discipline, and non-violence during the agitation. He declared that the DMK's democratic crusade would persist unabated.
