DMK working president M.K. Stalin formally thanked Union Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma on February 20, 2017, for responding promptly to the DMK's urgent representations and ordering the immediate resumption of archaeological excavations at the historic Keezhadi site in Sivaganga district. Stalin had previously expressed severe apprehension over bureaucratic delays and procedural bottlenecks that threatened to halt the crucial third phase of excavation work, which had unearthed remarkable urban artifacts proving the antiquity and sophistication of ancient Tamil civilization along the Vaigai river valley.
Stalin emphasized that the Keezhadi discoveries provide invaluable scientific evidence establishing that the Sangam era possessed advanced urban planning, literate trade networks, and sophisticated ceramic technology dating back over 2,500 years. Preserving and continuing systematic excavations under capable archaeological supervision is not merely a regional priority but a monumental duty owed to global human history. He appreciated the central minister for recognizing the cultural significance of the site and releasing necessary administrative approvals to recommence field explorations.
The opposition leader reiterated that Tamil heritage deserves uncompromising scientific patronage and national preservation. He urged central and state authorities to establish a world-class on-site museum at Keezhadi to exhibit the recovered artifacts securely.
