DMK working president M.K. Stalin remarked on February 22, 2017, that the massive, non-partisan participation of ordinary citizens, rural youth, college students, and women in statewide hunger strikes organized by the DMK was deeply encouraging and demonstrated a profound democratic awakening across Tamil Nadu. The statewide fast was organized to register moral protest against the blatant subversion of parliamentary procedure during the February 18 assembly trust vote, where opposition members were forcibly evicted before the confidence motion was declared passed.
Stalin observed that citizens participated voluntarily across party lines, transcending traditional political loyalties to register their collective outrage against the installation of a proxy government. The spontaneous solidarity displayed by working-class families and student groups demonstrated that the public refuses to accept the degradation of democratic conventions or the surrender of administrative governance to backroom factional syndicates. Stalin commended district organizers for maintaining impeccable non-violent discipline throughout the day-long hunger agitation.
The opposition leader affirmed that the DMK will continue to provide organizational leadership to popular civic resistance. He declared that authentic democratic authority rests with the sovereign people rather than compromised legislative majorities.
