DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin met President of India Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on February 24, 2017, submitting an extensive memorandum regarding the grave subversion of democracy during the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly's trust vote on February 18. Stalin detailed how Speaker P. Dhanapal conducted the floor test after forcibly evicting all eighty-nine DMK legislators through assembly marshals and police personnel, denying the opposition's legitimate demand for a secret ballot or division of votes.
Stalin informed the President that ruling party legislators had been held captive in a private luxury resort at Koovathur under strict armed vigilance prior to the vote, depriving them of independent decision-making. Conducting a crucial confidence motion behind locked doors, without the presence of the main opposition party and amid media blackout, constituted an unprecedented violation of constitutional norms and democratic conventions. Stalin urged the President to advise the Governor to order a fresh, transparent floor test under independent monitoring.
The opposition leader stated that defending legislative integrity requires urgent constitutional intervention. He affirmed that the DMK will exhaust all legal avenues to invalidate the manipulated assembly proceedings.
