Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent formal communication on February 24, 2017, to Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan, stating unequivocally that the proposed hydrocarbon extraction project in Neduvasal directly opposes the collective will and welfare of Tamil Nadu's people. Stalin highlighted the intense public distress and peaceful protests erupting across Pudukkottai district, where thousands of agricultural families and rural youth were staging round-the-clock demonstrations against exploratory deep-earth gas extraction.

Stalin explained in his letter that Pudukkottai constitutes an essential segment of Tamil Nadu's agrarian basin, where rural livelihoods depend entirely on vulnerable groundwater tables and delicate soil ecosystems. Introducing intensive hydrocarbon extraction operations poses grave risks of chemical contamination, groundwater depletion, and permanent agrarian destruction. He stressed that imposing commercial energy extraction against the unified opposition of local farming communities violates democratic federalism and threatens the state's fragile food security.

The opposition leader urged the Union Petroleum Ministry to respect Tamil Nadu's popular sentiment and immediately cancel the project contract. He affirmed that the DMK will firmly defend farmers' rights against coercive industrial exploitation.
