DMK working president M.K. Stalin declared on February 26, 2017, that while the AIADMK possesses the legal right to display former leader J. Jayalalithaa's portrait during internal party gatherings, naming government welfare schemes and public institutions after her following her conviction in the disproportionate assets case is completely illegal and unconstitutional. Stalin emphasized that the Supreme Court of India had upheld trial court findings establishing that Jayalalithaa accumulated illicit wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income, confirming corruption at the highest level of state administration.
Stalin argued that state funds belong entirely to taxpayers and must never be utilized to glorify individuals convicted of serious financial corruption. Continued governmental branding of public buses, municipal canteens, medical kits, and welfare packages with the name and imagery of a convicted politician demeans the rule of law and mocks the judicial pronouncements of the country's highest court. Administrative ethics demand that public institutions remain strictly neutral and divorced from convicted individuals.
The opposition leader urged the state administration to immediately remove Jayalalithaa's name from all state-funded welfare schemes. He warned that the DMK would pursue judicial intervention to ensure constitutional compliance.
