DMK working president M.K. Stalin urged the Union government on March 3, 2017, to immediately abandon the proposed hydrocarbon extraction project in Neduvasal, while calling upon the Tamil Nadu state administration to firmly refuse environmental clearances and operational licenses for the contentious initiative. Mobilizing public support under the popular hashtag SaveNeduvaasal, Stalin highlighted the widespread agrarian alarm in Pudukkottai district, where farming families had maintained continuous non-violent demonstrations against deep underground drilling.
Stalin cautioned that extracting hydrocarbons from fertile delta soils risks contaminating local aquifers, depleting irrigation resources, and rendering productive farmland completely barren. He maintained that commercial energy projects must never be imposed against the express consent of agricultural communities who depend entirely on fertile topsoil and shallow aquifers for sustenance. The state government holds clear regulatory authority to withhold land access and industrial clearances, and any administrative compliance with central energy directives would constitute an unforgivable betrayal of agrarian welfare.
The opposition leader reaffirmed the DMK's total solidarity with agitating agriculturists, youth, and village collectives. He promised that the DMK would sustain political resistance until central authorities formally cancel the exploratory mining project.
