DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin demanded on March 3, 2017, that the Tamil Nadu government immediately convene a special session of the legislative assembly to pass a unanimous resolution urging the Union government to drop the controversial Neduvasal hydrocarbon extraction project. Stalin stressed that farmers and rural residents across Pudukkottai district had taken to the streets in intense, non-violent demonstrations, fearing irreversible damage to their agricultural lands, groundwater reservoirs, and rural livelihood ecosystems.
Stalin reminded the state government that the assembly had demonstrated remarkable political unity earlier by holding a special session to pass unanimous legislation safeguarding Jallikattu. He argued that the grave environmental crisis threatening Tamil Nadu's fertile Cauvery delta basin warranted identical legislative urgency and collective political intervention. An official assembly resolution would provide formal constitutional backing to the agitating rural communities and demonstrate Tamil Nadu's collective determination to central ministries in New Delhi.
The opposition leader urged the Chief Minister not to remain passive while central agencies unilaterally pursued hydrocarbon contracts. He pledged that the DMK would vigorously champion the agrarian cause both inside the legislature and on the streets.
