DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a decisive ultimatum to the Tamil Nadu government on March 5, 2017, announcing that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will organize massive peaceful agitations in front of public distribution ration shops across every district if the acute shortage of essential commodities is not rectified within one week. Stalin expressed deep outrage that poor and working-class families who depend on fair price shops for daily sustenance were being turned away empty-handed due to severe administrative failure.
Stalin observed that basic staples, including boiled rice, sugar, lentils, and kerosene, had become virtually unavailable in fair price outlets across the state for over three months. Women and elderly citizens were forced to wait in long queues from early dawn only to be informed that stocks were exhausted or cards were unverified. Stalin condemned the ruling administration for compromising Tamil Nadu's pioneering universal public distribution system, which was meticulously developed into a nationwide model under successive DMK governments.
The opposition leader demanded that civil supplies authorities replenish all ration shop inventories immediately. He affirmed that the DMK will fearlessly lead public struggles to protect the nutritional security of vulnerable families.
