DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded condemnation on March 5, 2017, criticizing the corrupt AIADMK proxy government for directly hiking state sales taxes on petrol and diesel fuels. Stalin noted with indignation that while citizens were accustomed to criticizing central governments for erratic fuel price revisions, Tamil Nadu had now witnessed the unprecedented spectacle of its own state administration unilaterally raising fuel levies to extract excess revenues from struggling consumers.
Stalin pointed out that diesel price escalations immediately inflate transportation freight costs for vegetables, grains, milk, and basic groceries, causing widespread retail price inflation that disproportionately hurts lower-income families. Additionally, the agricultural sector, which was enduring unprecedented drought and water scarcity, faced increased irrigation pumping expenses. Stalin stressed that instead of curbing administrative corruption, eliminating systemic financial wastage, or recovering tax arrears from wealthy corporate defaulters, the ruling establishment chose the easiest path of burdening ordinary people.
The opposition leader demanded the immediate, unconditional revocation of the fuel tax hike. He reiterated that the DMK will stand firmly with affected consumers, trade associations, and transport workers across Tamil Nadu.
