DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin declared on March 5, 2017, that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will formally move a legislative amendment to reduce Value Added Tax on petroleum products during the upcoming state budget session if the Tamil Nadu government fails to immediately withdraw its unfair fuel price hike. Stalin condemned the state administration for imposing steep tax burdens on petrol and diesel, which triggered cascading inflation on essential commodities and public transport fares.
Stalin explained that the arbitrary increase in state taxes on transportation fuels dealt a severe blow to common citizens, motor vehicle operators, small freight transporters, and agricultural pump users who were already reeling under economic stress. Instead of absorbing fluctuations or providing consumer relief, the government chose to squeeze public pockets to compensate for treasury deficits caused by administrative extravagance and revenue leakages. Stalin asserted that public revenue must not be extracted by penalizing working citizens.
The opposition leader warned the treasury benches that the DMK will utilize all parliamentary provisions to challenge the hike inside the assembly. He affirmed that the opposition will relentlessly demand immediate tax reductions to protect consumer livelihoods.
