DMK working president M.K. Stalin called upon the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on March 6, 2017, to move beyond merely dispatching formal letters to New Delhi and immediately send the state Fisheries Minister to the national capital to press for the prompt release of detained Tamil fishermen and their impounded mechanized boats. Stalin observed that writing customary letters had become a predictable bureaucratic formality that failed to yield concrete diplomatic outcomes or relieve ongoing distress.
Stalin emphasized that the crisis required proactive executive intervention and relentless personal advocacy by state ministers. Delegating the Fisheries Minister to camp in New Delhi, meet the External Affairs Minister, and directly brief national leadership would demonstrate urgent political intent. Stalin pointed out that while political leadership remained passive, scores of breadwinners were enduring harsh conditions in foreign prisons while their families faced acute starvation and economic destitution across coastal districts.
The opposition leader demanded that the state government demonstrate tangible concern for the seafaring populace. He urged the administration to coordinate closely with central authorities, secure unconditional release of all detained fishermen, and retrieve confiscated fishing vessels before irreparable economic harm occurs.
