DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a passionate appeal to the Union government on March 6, 2017, urging national authorities to stop treating Tamil Nadu fishermen with passive indifference and act decisively with the conviction that they are equal Indian citizens. Stalin criticized central leaders for maintaining an aloof attitude toward recurring foreign naval attacks, asking whether the Union would maintain similar silence if fishermen from northern or western coastal states were subjected to routine harassment, firing, and detention by neighboring nations.
Stalin asserted that the fundamental right to life, liberty, and peaceful livelihood enshrined in the Constitution belongs to every Indian, including coastal communities venturing into the Palk Bay. When Sri Lankan naval patrols intercept unarmed Indian trawlers, assault fishermen, and confiscate productive maritime assets, it represents a direct challenge to Indian sovereign protection. Stalin insisted that the Ministry of External Affairs must replace routine diplomatic notes with robust diplomatic action to safeguard traditional fishing zones.
The opposition leader affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the maritime rights of Tamil fishermen. He urged the Union government to ensure continuous naval patrolling and secure permanent protection for coastal workers.
