Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed intense grief and outrage on March 7, 2017, condemning the horrific killing of twenty-one-year-old Rameswaram fisherman Britjo by Sri Lankan naval forces. Stalin stated that opening direct gunfire on unarmed young fishermen engaged in lawful traditional fishing in the Palk Bay is an act of blatant state-sponsored violence that demands the strongest condemnation from all civilized societies and democratic governments worldwide.

Stalin highlighted the tragic human dimension of the atrocity, pointing out that Britjo was a hardworking young youth who ventured into the sea simply to earn a daily meal for his impoverished family. His untimely death plunged the entire coastal community of Rameswaram and fishing hamlets across Tamil Nadu into profound mourning and justifiable anger. Stalin criticized both state and central administrations for failing to prevent such recurring tragedies despite repeated warnings and desperate appeals from coastal representatives over many years.

The opposition leader demanded that the Union government summon the Sri Lankan envoy immediately, lodge a strong diplomatic protest, and initiate criminal proceedings against the naval personnel responsible. He assured the grieving fishing community of the DMK's total solidarity and support.
