DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on March 7, 2017, that the Union government immediately cease remaining a passive spectator to the lethal shooting of Indian fishermen and issue a stern, public warning to the Sri Lankan government. Stalin condemned the brutal gunning down of twenty-one-year-old Rameswaram fisherman Britjo by the Sri Lankan Navy, emphasizing that such cold-blooded aggression against unarmed Indian citizens fishing in international or contiguous waters is completely unacceptable for a self-respecting sovereign nation.
Stalin emphasized that the central government has a constitutional duty to protect all Indian citizens equally, regardless of whether they live on northern borders or southern coastlines. He criticized New Delhi's timid diplomatic responses, arguing that polite diplomatic communications and routine bilateral statements had only emboldened Sri Lankan forces to use live ammunition with total impunity against Tamil fishermen. Stalin insisted that India must assert its maritime authority and make it unambiguously clear that armed attacks against Indian nationals will not be tolerated.
The opposition leader urged the Prime Minister and external affairs authorities to intervene decisively, secure justice for Britjo's family, and guarantee permanent maritime security for Tamil Nadu's fishing communities.
