DMK working president M.K. Stalin condemned the AIADMK administration on March 10, 2017, pointing out that Tamil Nadu's outstanding public debt had escalated to an unprecedented 2.59 lakh crore rupees, pushing state financial management into a precarious state. Stalin highlighted that the astronomical rise in public borrowing under the ruling party was unprecedented in Tamil Nadu's administrative history, revealing a complete collapse of fiscal discipline and economic planning across state departments.

Stalin observed that instead of investing borrowed capital into vital economic drivers such as irrigation modernization, industrial infrastructure, and public health facilities, the administration exhausted funds on servicing previous loan interests and covering recurring deficits. This borrowing spiral severely constricted the state's capacity to allocate resources for urgent welfare needs, rural drought relief, or public sector development. Stalin warned that such fiscal deterioration threatens Tamil Nadu's sovereign creditworthiness and future welfare programs.

The opposition leader demanded that the government place comprehensive financial disclosures before the legislative assembly, detailing loan utilization and revenue recovery measures. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion fiscal accountability to safeguard Tamil Nadu's economic future and public welfare.
