DMK working president M.K. Stalin announced on March 10, 2017, that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has commissioned a high-level research study on Tamil Nadu's financial health, prepared under the leadership of renowned public finance economists and fiscal management experts, which will be released to the public shortly. Stalin stated that this independent evaluation was urgently necessitated by the alarming deterioration of the state's economy, soaring revenue deficits, and unsustainable debt accumulation under the AIADMK administration.

Stalin observed that governance without fiscal discipline, transparency, and economic foresight had pushed Tamil Nadu into an unprecedented debt trap, jeopardizing ongoing welfare delivery and future developmental capacity. The commissioned study aims to provide a rigorous, empirical analysis of state revenue trends, expenditure distortions, mounting public debt burdens, and potential revival pathways. Stalin underscored that an evidence-based diagnosis is vital for alerting taxpayers and restoring sound economic stewardship.

The opposition leader stressed that the DMK believes in constructive, policy-driven opposition that presents workable administrative alternatives rather than mere criticism.
