Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Thangachimadam on March 11, 2017, to express steadfast solidarity and heartfelt support with thousands of coastal fishermen and women staging a continuous protest for the fifth consecutive day following the fatal shooting of young fisherman Britjo. Sitting alongside striking community leaders, parish priests, and agitated families, Stalin listened closely to their harrowing accounts of ongoing harassment, midnight shootings, and severe economic losses inflicted by Sri Lankan naval patrols.

Stalin commended the fishing community for their disciplined and resolute resistance, noting that their agitation was an essential fight to safeguard the fundamental right to life and livelihood guaranteed under the Indian Constitution. He criticized both central and state administrations for neglecting to send senior ministers to interact directly with the aggrieved fisherfolk or offer credible guarantees regarding their safety at sea. Stalin emphasized that coastal working people deserve respect and tangible security, not empty platitudes.

The opposition leader pledged the complete institutional backing of the DMK for the demands formulated by the striking fishermen. He demanded that central authorities initiate decisive bilateral action, release impounded mechanised boats, and guarantee that no Indian fisherman is subjected to foreign naval violence again.
