DMK working president M.K. Stalin insisted on March 11, 2017, that the Tamil Nadu government must immediately exert decisive political and constitutional pressure on the Union government to compel an absolute end to recurring attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan military. Speaking to reporters in Rameswaram, Stalin remarked that issuing routine letters of concern to New Delhi had proven completely ineffective in deterring foreign naval hostility or protecting innocent lives along the Palk Bay.

Stalin highlighted that coastal fishermen are proud citizens of India, and defending their physical safety, territorial fishing rights, and dignity represents the sovereign responsibility of the national government. When armed foreign gunboats fire upon unarmed Indian citizens, the Union government cannot remain a passive spectator or treat the crisis as a peripheral regional concern. Stalin maintained that only forceful, high-level diplomatic intervention and active coast guard protection can deter naval aggression from Colombo.

The opposition leader called upon the Chief Minister to lead an all-party delegation directly to New Delhi to press the Prime Minister for immediate guarantees. He affirmed that the DMK will never abandon coastal communities in their struggle for life, liberty, and maritime livelihood.
