DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Rameswaram Government Hospital on March 11, 2017, where he placed a floral wreath and paid solemn homage to the mortal remains of twenty-one-year-old fisherman Britjo, who was shot dead by the Sri Lankan Navy while fishing in his traditional waters. Stalin consoled the grieving parents, relatives, and fellow village fishermen, expressing deep sorrow over the brutal snuffing out of an innocent young life that was the sole economic hope of a vulnerable seaside family.
Stalin observed that the tragic killing demonstrated the continued lawlessness and lethal brutality of Sri Lankan naval forces operating in the Palk Strait. Indian fishermen who venture into their historic maritime routes to secure everyday sustenance are systematically targeted with live ammunition, arrests, and boat confiscations. Stalin emphasized that such unprovoked attacks constitute grave violations of international human rights and bilateral maritime understandings.
The opposition leader affirmed that the DMK will persistently support coastal fishing communities in their democratic struggle for dignity and security. He demanded immediate, substantial compensation from both central and state governments for Britjo's family, urging decisive diplomatic interventions to ensure maritime protection for Tamil fishermen.
