DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Tamil Nadu government on March 15, 2017, accusing the proxy administration of executing daytime highway robbery against ordinary citizens by converting standard commuter buses into express fare services without any official fare revision announcement. Stalin expressed outrage that state authorities chose to bypass transparent public consultations and legislative debate, resorting to covert re-labeling of fleet vehicles to siphon extra money from everyday commuters.
Stalin pointed out that this backdoor fare hike hit low-income commuters at a time when rural distress and economic stagnation were already straining family budgets across the state. Ordinary citizens who boarded familiar buses suddenly found themselves coerced into paying inflated tickets for the exact same dilapidated vehicles, unpunctual services, and overcrowded conditions. Stalin emphasized that public utility corporations exist to serve citizens, not to extract unfair charges through administrative deception and stealthy tariff manipulation.
The opposition leader demanded that the state transport department immediately cancel all converted express designations and restore standard fares across municipal routes. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently defend the rights and economic dignity of working-class commuters throughout Tamil Nadu.
