DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on March 15, 2017, that the state government immediately reclassify 766 Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses back into ordinary passenger services and completely withdraw the stealth bus fare increase imposed on Chennai commuters. Stalin highlighted that these 766 buses, which previously operated as ordinary commuter services charging minimum fares, had been arbitrarily relabeled as express services overnight solely to extract higher ticket charges from unsuspecting daily passengers.
Stalin explained that ordinary bus services represent the vital circulatory system for Chennai's working populace, carrying hundreds of thousands of factory workers, domestic laborers, retail employees, and school students every morning. By artificially converting nearly a thousand standard buses into higher-tier express operations, the administration curtailed affordable commuting options and inflicted severe daily financial distress on vulnerable families. Stalin criticized the ruling establishment for choosing underhanded administrative tricks rather than addressing operational inefficiencies directly.
The opposition leader insisted that public transport must remain accessible, affordable, and equitable for all citizens. He urged transport ministers to revoke the reclassification order immediately and safeguard the economic interests of daily commuters across Chennai.
