DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a stern warning to the Tamil Nadu government on March 15, 2017, announcing that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will organize a massive democratic peaceful protest across the state if the stealth bus fare increase is not revoked immediately. Stalin condemned the state administration for surreptitiously burdening daily wage earners, students, and working-class families who rely completely on state-operated transport networks for their daily livelihoods.
Stalin pointed out that instead of openly announcing a tariff revision, the transport department had quietly reclassified ordinary low-fare city buses into express and deluxe services, effectively doubling ticket prices on routine commuter routes. This deceitful maneuver severely penalized lower-income citizens who were already grappling with soaring food inflation and economic stagnation. Stalin emphasized that public transport is a social service created to empower working people, not a profit-extracting commercial monopoly to offset governmental mismanagement.
The opposition leader demanded that transport authorities roll back all reclassified fares immediately and restore subsidized commuter passes. He affirmed that if the government fails to heed public resentment, the DMK will mobilize widespread democratic agitations across Tamil Nadu until justice is restored.
