DMK working president M.K. Stalin sharply criticized the AIADMK administration on March 16, 2017, after official state budget documents revealed that Tamil Nadu's total public debt liability would surpass an unprecedented 3,14,366 crore rupees by 2018. Stalin remarked with biting irony that plunging a once fiscally prudent state into historical debt traps appeared to be the crowning achievement of the ruling party. He noted that astronomical borrowing had occurred alongside a complete paralysis in industrial development, capital infrastructure, and social sector investments.

Stalin pointed out that during DMK governance under Dr. M. Karunanidhi, borrowing was strictly regulated to fund durable productive assets, including highways, industrial estates, water desalination plants, and educational infrastructure. In sharp contrast, the AIADMK regime borrowed relentlessly merely to service mounting interest payments and cover daily administrative inefficiencies. As a result, every household in Tamil Nadu was burdened with heavy per capita debt liabilities while receiving declining public services and dilapidated civic infrastructure.

The opposition leader demanded that the state administration restore fiscal discipline and present a concrete debt reduction strategy. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently hold the government accountable for endangering Tamil Nadu's economic stability.
