DMK working president M.K. Stalin delivered a trenchant critique of the state budget on March 16, 2017, pointing out that under successive AIADMK administrations, annual financial presentations had devolved into predictable exercises where public debt surges relentlessly while tangible development schemes remain completely nonexistent. Stalin highlighted that the government's fiscal roadmap lacked any creative vision to stimulate capital investment, revive sagging manufacturing sectors, or create productive employment opportunities for educated youth.
Stalin observed that instead of utilizing borrowed capital for revenue-generating infrastructure such as industrial corridors, modern irrigation networks, or transport logistics, the ruling administration was utilizing debt merely to service existing loans and cover recurring administrative deficits. This reckless financial mismanagement was pushing Tamil Nadu toward a dangerous debt trap, placing a severe long-term burden on future generations without delivering corresponding socio-economic infrastructure or public assets.
The opposition leader demanded that the state government publish a comprehensive white paper detailing public liabilities, borrowing costs, and revenue leakages. He stressed that sustainable governance requires rigorous fiscal discipline, strategic capital outlay, and accountable financial stewardship, pledging that the DMK will relentlessly pursue fiscal transparency inside and outside the assembly.
