DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded statement on March 17, 2017, unequivocally condemning the incident of footwear being thrown at Union Minister of State Pon. Radhakrishnan during an event in Salem. Stalin asserted that such uncivilized acts of physical disrespect are completely contrary to the dignified cultural values, democratic norms, and political traditions that the people of Tamil Nadu have historically cherished and preserved.
Stalin emphasized that while sharp ideological differences, political disagreements, and spirited public debates are fundamental to a healthy democracy, expressing dissent through physical insults or violence has no place in civilized public life. He noted that political leadership demands standing firmly for mutual respect and democratic decorum, regardless of partisan rivalries or policy disputes. Stalin maintained that democratic opposition must always be articulated through lawful debate, electoral mobilization, and principled agitation.
The opposition leader urged all political organizations and citizens to uphold democratic dignity and eschew reactionary violence under all circumstances. He called upon law enforcement authorities to maintain peace, ensure proper security for public figures, and guarantee that democratic interactions across Tamil Nadu remain respectful, peaceful, and constructive.
