DMK working president M.K. Stalin made an impassioned plea on March 18, 2017, urging both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to heed the agonizing appeals of Tamil Nadu agriculturists demonstrating at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for five consecutive days. Stalin underscored that distressed farmers had traveled thousands of kilometers to the national capital to draw urgent attention to devastating crop failures, dried irrigation tanks, and crippling agricultural debts that had claimed hundreds of peasant lives across the Cauvery delta and southern districts.

Stalin condemned the disturbing indifference exhibited by central and state authorities toward the protesting growers. He emphasized that farmers were staging desperate symbolic protests, holding skulls of departed peers and begging for survival, yet no senior minister from the central cabinet or state government had visited them to offer formal reassurance. Stalin asserted that food producers deserve institutional dignity and urgent economic relief rather than cold bureaucratic neglect.

The opposition leader called for comprehensive agricultural loan waivers from nationalized banks, immediate disbursement of adequate central drought assistance, and constitution of the Cauvery Management Board. He affirmed the DMK's total solidarity with the protesting farmers.
