DMK working president M.K. Stalin criticized the state government on March 25, 2017, for abruptly wrapping up the annual budget session in merely one week instead of conducting an extensive month-long legislative debate. Stalin pointed out that the administration rushed through major budgetary allocations and statutory approvals without adequate deliberation so that ministers could redirect their complete attention to campaigning in the Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar by-election. He termed this curtailment an insult to parliamentary conventions and democratic accountability.
Stalin explained that the state budget requires thorough department-wise scrutiny, allowing elected representatives from all constituencies to debate policy allocations, rural development priorities, drinking water crises, and educational funding. By truncating legislative proceedings to an unprecedented degree, the ruling leadership evaded answering critical questions regarding escalating public debt and governance paralysis. Stalin argued that abandoning legislative oversight to focus exclusively on partisan electoral survival demonstrated complete disregard for statewide public interest.
The opposition leader asserted that democratic institutions must not be reduced to convenient tools of partisan convenience. He reaffirmed that the DMK will continue raising urgent citizen issues directly before the public forum across Tamil Nadu.
