DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued an urgent appeal to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on March 26, 2017, insisting that he travel immediately to New Delhi to meet with protesting Tamil Nadu farmers and secure a decisive resolution to their acute agrarian grievances. Stalin highlighted that elderly agriculturists and peasant leaders had been demonstrating under scorching heat at Jantar Mantar for weeks, highlighting devastating drought losses, crop failures, and crippling bank debts that were driving rural families to despair.
Stalin criticized the state leadership for maintaining an indifferent distance while vulnerable food producers suffered immense physical humiliation on national capital streets to catch governmental attention. He pointed out that it is the constitutional duty of an elected Chief Minister to stand firmly beside his state's farmers, lead an all-party delegation, and forcefully negotiate comprehensive debt waivers and substantial drought relief packages with the Union government.
The opposition leader warned that governmental apathy toward rural distress imperils Tamil Nadu's agricultural future and social fabric. He demanded that the state executive act without further delay, meet the agitators in person, and guarantee immediate economic protection for distressed agrarian families.
