DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin criticized the Tamil Nadu government on March 29, 2017, for summarily rejecting his demand to pass a special resolution in the state legislative assembly against the controversial Neduvasal hydrocarbon extraction project. Stalin reminded the treasury benches that the assembly had previously convened a special session to pass unanimous legislation safeguarding Jallikattu following massive youth protests across the state. He insisted that the agrarian crisis in Pudukkottai district deserved identical legislative urgency and collective political intervention.
Stalin asserted that local farming communities in Neduvasal were staging sustained peaceful demonstrations fearing irreversible groundwater contamination, soil degradation, and loss of ancestral livelihoods. By refusing to adopt a formal assembly resolution, the ruling administration demonstrated complete indifference toward public sentiment and environmental security. Stalin maintained that a unanimous house resolution would send an unmistakable message to the Union government demanding the project's cancellation.
The opposition leader affirmed that the DMK stands unreservedly with the protesting agriculturists and rural families. He urged the state administration to reconsider its passive stance, summon legislative authority, and formally record Tamil Nadu's collective refusal against hazardous commercial projects.
