DMK working president M.K. Stalin launched a fierce attack on March 29, 2017, accusing the Union government of playing dangerous double standards regarding the controversial hydrocarbon extraction project in Neduvasal, while the state government acted as a silent accomplice. Stalin pointed out that while central ministers claimed the project would not proceed without state consent, exploration licenses and commercial contracts were being aggressively signed in New Delhi. Meanwhile, the state government offered feeble verbal assurances without enacting binding executive prohibitions.

Stalin emphasized that the Cauvery delta is Tamil Nadu's precious food bowl, where deep hydraulic fracturing and hydrocarbon extraction would irreversibly pollute groundwater, destroy fertile agricultural lands, and trigger environmental catastrophe. Thousands of farming families, women, and youths had maintained non-violent continuous protests in Pudukkottai district for over a month to defend their ancestral lands. Stalin stated that governance must protect ecological treasures rather than sacrificing agrarian livelihoods for corporate commercial exploitation.

The opposition leader demanded that both Union and state administrations immediately scrap the hydrocarbon initiative. He reaffirmed the DMK's absolute determination to safeguard the Cauvery delta and protect farming communities.
