DMK working president M.K. Stalin registered strong condemnation on March 30, 2017, against the surreptitious replacement of English lettering with Hindi on national highway milestones across Tamil Nadu. Stalin described the coordinated move by the National Highways Authority of India as a blatant, underhanded attempt to impose Hindi upon non-Hindi speaking commuters and motorists. He pointed out that effacing established English text to impose an unfamiliar language created severe navigational confusion and infringed upon linguistic rights.
Stalin recalled that bilingual conventions featuring Tamil and English had functioned smoothly for decades, respecting both local culture and international connectivity. Forcibly introducing Hindi on highway signboards in Tamil Nadu reflected an arrogant majoritarian mindset seeking cultural homogenization. The opposition leader warned that such provocative administrative actions generate immense public resentment and dishonor the constitutional compact binding diverse Indian states together.
The DMK leader demanded that the central ministry immediately restore English lettering alongside Tamil on all highway milestones. He declared that DMK cadres would not hesitate to initiate massive democratic agitations to protect Tamil pride and uphold established linguistic norms across the state.
