DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a firm statement on March 30, 2017, cautioning the Union government that the fire of resistance against Hindi imposition in Tamil Nadu continues to burn fiercely beneath the surface without ever losing its sharp edge. Stalin advised central policymakers to abandon dangerous illusions that generations of Tamils have forgotten their historic struggle against linguistic domination. He emphasized that any attempt to forcibly install Hindi as India's sole national language would meet determined popular resistance.
Stalin observed that the BJP administration was systematically attempting to dilute federal diversity by pushing Hindi through educational curricula, railway examinations, postal services, and national highway networks. Such covert impositions violate the solemn linguistic guarantees given by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to non-Hindi speaking peoples. The opposition leader maintained that true federalism thrives on mutual linguistic respect and equal recognition of all regional languages.
Stalin reaffirmed the DMK's historic role as the vanguard of Tamil identity and linguistic rights. He urged the Union government to concentrate on nationwide economic development rather than stirring divisive linguistic friction across southern states.
