DMK working president M.K. Stalin sounded a stern warning to the BJP-led Union government on March 30, 2017, cautioning that if it persists in crowning Hindi while belittling the ancient Tamil language, it will face a ferocious new anti-Hindi agitation. Stalin reacted strongly to aggressive central initiatives aimed at imposing Hindi across non-Hindi speaking states, particularly through central government communications, public sector banks, and infrastructure signboards. He affirmed that Tamils will never tolerate second-class linguistic citizenship.
Stalin recalled the heroic anti-Hindi agitations of 1938 and 1965, where countless Tamil students and linguistic martyrs sacrificed their lives to safeguard the mother tongue against linguistic hegemony. He stated that Tamil is not merely a mode of communication, but the cultural soul, civilizational identity, and intellectual heritage of seven crore people. Imposing a single language undermines India's linguistic diversity and threatens national unity by alienating proud linguistic nationalities.
The opposition leader declared that the DMK will spearhead mass democratic resistance if central authorities continue their linguistic chauvinism. He demanded that all twenty-two languages in the Eighth Schedule be declared official languages of the Union.
