DMK working president M.K. Stalin appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 1, 2017, urging him to generously set aside time from his official schedule, invite protesting Tamil Nadu farmers for direct dialogue, and reach a fair, amicable resolution to their distress. Stalin highlighted that distressed farmers had travelled over two thousand kilometres to the national capital, enduring extreme physical hardship at Jantar Mantar while demanding drought relief, debt waivers, and Cauvery river water rights.
Stalin observed that in a vibrant democracy, the Prime Minister is the supreme guardian of every citizen, especially vulnerable food producers facing agrarian collapse. It was deeply painful to witness elderly farmers holding skulls of deceased brethren and staging desperate demonstrations without receiving an official hearing from the Union executive. Stalin stressed that constructive dialogue and empathetic statesmanship, rather than bureaucratic neglect, represent the true hallmark of responsible national leadership.
The opposition leader urged the Prime Minister to intervene promptly, announce a comprehensive agrarian relief package, and waive agricultural bank loans. Stalin reiterated that saving farmers' lives is a sacred national responsibility that cannot be delayed.
