DMK working president M.K. Stalin announced on April 1, 2017, that if the ongoing agitation of Tamil Nadu farmers in New Delhi continues without official resolution, the DMK will convene a comprehensive all-party meeting in Chennai to chart a decisive state-wide protest course. Stalin expressed grave distress that elderly cultivators from the Cauvery delta were forced to protest under blistering summer heat at Jantar Mantar for weeks, while both Union and state governments remained indifferent.
Stalin asserted that the plight of farmers is an existential issue concerning the collective conscience of all Tamils. The unprecedented drought had desiccated water reservoirs, destroyed standing crops, and triggered scores of tragic farmer suicides across rural districts. Instead of providing immediate financial succour and agricultural loan waivers, the ruling dispensation remained paralyzed by factional squabbling. Stalin stated that when governing authorities fail in their constitutional duty to protect food producers, all democratic forces must unite to enforce accountability.
The opposition leader reaffirmed the DMK's unwavering solidarity with the agrarian community. He emphasized that the proposed all-party conclave would forge a unified front to compel immediate central and state agrarian relief.
