DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced deep concern on April 3, 2017, after coastal fishing communities in Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar revealed that government welfare benefits were entirely denied to them under the corrupt ruling dispensation. During extensive interactions with traditional fishermen and coastal women, residents voiced severe frustration over the non-disbursement of lean-period allowances, subsidized fuel quotas, boat repair grants, and housing assistance. Coastal hamlets also suffered from defective sanitation networks, absent street lighting, and contaminated drinking water supplies.
Stalin sharply condemned the state government for abandoning hardworking fisherfolk whose dangerous labor feeds millions of citizens. He recalled that previous DMK administrations under Dr. M. Karunanidhi had created dedicated welfare boards, introduced specialized insurance packages, provided motorized boat subsidies, and established modern fishing harbors along Tamil Nadu's coastline. In contrast, the current administration had allowed coastal civic infrastructure to decay while diverting public welfare funds for partisan political schemes.
The opposition leader promised that the DMK would fight resolutely to restore all welfare rights and upgrade coastal community living standards. He assured fisherfolk that their livelihood security remains the DMK's highest priority.
