DMK working president M.K. Stalin warmly welcomed the historic Madras High Court order on April 4, 2017, directing the state government to extend cooperative agricultural loan waivers to all farmers across Tamil Nadu. Stalin remarked that the judicial intervention brought immense comfort and relief to thousands of struggling agrarian families who were waging historic protests against severe drought and debt burdens. He commended the court for upholding humanitarian justice when the executive had failed to protect rural livelihoods.
Stalin recalled that the AIADMK administration had arbitrarily restricted previous loan waivers only to small and marginal farmers, unjustly excluding thousands of equally distressed cultivators who faced total crop loss. The high court's directive dismantled this discriminatory restriction, affirming that catastrophic drought affects every farmer uniformly regardless of acreage. Stalin urged the state government to accept the ruling gracefully, allocate necessary budgetary support immediately, and issue formal debt discharge certificates without delay.
The opposition leader stressed that agriculture forms the economic backbone of Tamil Nadu. He pledged that the DMK will persistently fight for agrarian justice, comprehensive water security, and fair price mechanisms for all farmers.
