DMK working president M.K. Stalin made a passionate appeal on April 4, 2017, demanding that both Union and state governments waive agricultural loans secured by farmers from nationalised commercial banks to liberate them from crippling poverty. Stalin pointed out that while cooperative bank loans covered a fraction of agrarian credit, millions of small, marginal, and medium farmers were heavily indebted to public sector nationalised banks. With Tamil Nadu experiencing its worst drought in 140 years, total crop loss had left rural families utterly destitute.

Stalin emphasized that the agrarian crisis required a comprehensive, non-discriminatory national response. He questioned why the Union government could write off massive bad debts for corporate conglomerates while ignoring desperate pleas from farmers protesting barefoot in New Delhi. The opposition leader maintained that food security depends on preserving the economic viability of farming households. Selective relief or partial waivers, he warned, would fail to stem the tragic tide of agrarian distress and farmer suicides across delta districts.

Stalin reiterated the DMK's unyielding resolve to stand with farmers until complete debt relief is secured. He urged both governments to announce an immediate agrarian rescue package.
