DMK working president M.K. Stalin registered the party's severe condemnation on April 6, 2017, against former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam for orchestrating a debased by-election campaign centering on a staged replica coffin. Stalin stated that using morbid theatrical props to solicit votes in Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar breached all boundaries of civilized political decorum. He observed that after decades of holding high constitutional office, Panneerselvam's descent into such macabre gimmicks exposed absolute political desperation and intellectual bankruptcy.

Stalin pointed out that while North Chennai residents were clamoring for basic civic amenities, clean drinking water, and sustainable employment, the ruling factions were busy staging grotesque street spectacles. Rather than addressing how they would resolve mounting urban distress or provide accountable governance, the rebel faction sought to harvest cheap emotional sentiment. The opposition leader insisted that true leaders demonstrate their worth through administrative vision, constructive public programs, and transparent public accountability.

Stalin reaffirmed the DMK's historic commitment to principled politics and civic dignity. He urged voters across RK Nagar to reject degrading spectacles decisively and vote for genuine development on the Rising Sun symbol.
