DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed deep revulsion on April 6, 2017, questioning whether parading a national flag-draped replica coffin through residential streets for narrow electoral gains does not utterly tarnish democratic dignity. Stalin condemned the morbid campaigning tactics adopted by the rebel AIADMK faction led by O. Panneerselvam in the Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar by-election. He pointed out that dragging a symbolic coffin around polling divisions demeaned the solemnity of the national tricolour and mocked citizen sensitivities.
Stalin observed that democratic campaigning should be an enlightened battle of ideas, policies, and tangible public service records. Instead, rival factions of the ruling party had degenerated into macabre political theatrics designed to exploit grief and manufacture voter sympathy. The opposition leader emphasized that the national flag represents the collective sovereignty, sacrifice, and honor of 1.3 billion Indians, not a cheap prop for partisan campaign spectacles. He urged election authorities to prohibit such disrespectful displays immediately.
The DMK leader reiterated that public life demands decency, ethical restraint, and progressive leadership. He called upon the electorate to reject morbid gimmicks and uphold Tamil Nadu's democratic honor.
