DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly criticized former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on April 6, 2017, for blatantly exploiting the memory and likeness of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to serve his narrow political ambitions. Stalin asked whether parading symbolic effigies, replica coffins, and emotional portraits across campaign streets represented Panneerselvam's idea of showing gratitude to his departed leader. He condemned the distasteful campaign spectacles as a desperate attempt to manipulate voter sympathy after failing as an administrator.
Stalin pointed out that Panneerselvam had enjoyed supreme political patronage and executive authority under Jayalalithaa for decades. Yet, following her demise, his faction resorted to morbid campaign tactics that demeaned public sensibility and lowered political discourse in Tamil Nadu. The opposition leader emphasized that democratic elections must be contested on substantive policy visions, governance records, and civic development agendas rather than opportunistic emotional exploitation.
Stalin asserted that the DMK approaches politics with dignity, focusing on people's fundamental needs and progressive public welfare. He urged the electorate to reject morbid political theatrics and demand accountable, mature governance that respects democratic decencies across Tamil Nadu.
