DMK working president M.K. Stalin sharply questioned former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on April 7, 2017, challenging him to name a single transformative welfare scheme implemented during his three tenures heading the state government. Stalin mocked Panneerselvam's sudden election stunt of releasing separate ward-wise manifestos for RK Nagar, asking why such developmental zeal never materialized when he held supreme executive power. He characterized the promises as hollow rhetoric aimed solely at misleading gullible voters during by-election campaigning.
Stalin reminded the public that governance requires authentic vision, policy dedication, and practical execution, not eleventh-hour campaign manifestos designed for media consumption. During his multiple tenures as Chief Minister, Panneerselvam presided over economic stagnation, acute agrarian suffering, severe industrial slowdown, and unprecedented drinking water scarcity. Stalin highlighted that previous DMK administrations under Dr. M. Karunanidhi had introduced pioneering welfare milestones like free color televisions, farmers' free electricity, and women's self-help groups.
The opposition leader affirmed that the DMK consistently delivers on its developmental pledges for the welfare of all communities. He urged voters to evaluate leaders by their proven record of service rather than empty campaign promises.
